Music packaging
Whilst living in South Korea I became fascinated with the design of KPOP albums. Unlike over here you don’t just get a CD in a box, you generally get a book full of photos of the artist and other fun additions. I wanted to recreate this experience with a western artist to help rethink how we sell physical music.
I have chosen to recreate the album “MAYBE SOMEDAY IT’LL ALL BE OKAY” by Clinton Kane. This album is an incredibly sad album about both heartbreak and the loss of family members. It is dark, angry and insightful, I have tried to create illustrations and designs which reflect this. I have designed the CD itself which will fit in the back cover of the book and a series of photo pages to go inside the book. The photos and illustrations seen within the book depict the songs themselves and are all based on quotes or themes within the album.
When getting a KPOP album you also often get other gifts alongside it. Pre-orders may come with posters or other merchandise and all the albums will come with photocards. Photocards are small cards with selfies of the artists on, generally a selection is designed and you get one or two in your album. They are highly collectable and have a good market or trading between avid fans. I have designed a series of photocards to go with the album, I then created a tote bag and hoodie for possible additional merchandise.
One thing that I wanted to avoid was using the same imagery on everything. You want the opening or your album to feel like an experience not just a copy and paste situation. Therefore, all additional elements with this album are inspired by illustrations within the album itself rather than just having the album cover printed on a bunch of items.
